about

The Storm was where I really started embracing a 'wall of sound' approach as a legitimate method of songwriting, where the melody wasn't necessarily the most important part, or sometimes didn't even exist. This piece was like Mystify in that I started with one idea and 16 straight hours later, ended up with this. The rain was recorded from my back porch on the built in mic of my old iBook, then layered, EQ'd, and reverb-ified within an inch of it's existence. An interesting fact- I spent a fair amount of time removing parrot sounds from the rain track, since it was summer and the family parrot lived on the porch. There are still one or two slight squawks in it if you listen closely.

The rest of the piece was written more or less on the spot with the central concept of imitating a storm. The beginning is the calm before, the middle is the tumultuous thrashing of rain and lightning, with a tornado alarm represented by a high bass lead and guitar leads, then fading into nothing as the storm moves past.
